The gem / ice series of works call to mind differing states of being.
Diamonds, emeralds and sapphires in their constitution remind us ultimately of time – the eons it has taken for their geological formation. In subject matter they might appear to deviate from my attention to the mesh or membrane or its alternative the object but the transparently rendered chunks which seem to float across the surface of the canvas allude to ice or crystals, or perhaps to the melting of ice from solid to liquid, to water. They suggest transformation and the conditions required for changing states. They hover somewhere between solid and liquid, between core and membrane or between inside and outside. They remind us of the delicate biological balance, our dependency on this balance and the principle of self-regulation.
The canvas versions are 'one-offs'.
